Who is Zach Bigalke?

Zach grew up in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a transplant from central Wisconsin. He lived year-round on a seasonal resort in Grand Teton National Park with his parents and one younger sister. Playing among moose and in the shadow of the mountains, life offered a dual glimpse at the extremes of society -- a diverse community during the summer as employees and tourists from around the world come to the park; a ghost town in the winter as snow envelops everything in sight.

Bigalke found competition in games of the mind. Zach competed at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC, in both 1996 and 1997. Zach was later a renowned high-school debater and extemporaneous speaker at Jackson Hole High School in Jackson, Wyoming, competing in two NFL National Tournaments. After a failed entry into college life at Lewis and Clark College, a reversion to the resort life of his youth led him into the kitchen.

Zach is a graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu Hospitality and Restaurant Program at Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Oregon. Bigalke has worked at such various restaurants as Serratto, a top-ten fine-dining Italian establishment in Portland, Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa in Galena, Illinois, and Brooks Lake Lodge on Togwotee Pass, Wyoming. His love of fine ingredients and bold presentations currently see him working at the University of Oregon's catering department.

And Zach is also a freelance writer. Whether discussing sports both foreign and domestic, pondering the fate of our environmental future, or decrying the excesses of government, Zach Bigalke can be counted on to provide a viewpoint on a wide variety of issues. The Cerebral Vortex is the depository for all his writing, a one-stop shop where everything penned by Bigalke can be found categorized and date-stamped for your convenience.
